Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Strada Easel made?
The Strada Easel is manufactured and assembled in the USA.
Why should I choose the Strada Easel over other pochade boxes?
The Strada Easel is a simpler, stronger, thinner portable box easel with a unique self-locking component. The Strada Easel offers significant improvements on the more conventional wood box easels on the market today. Made from high quality aluminum with fewer than half the parts of other easels and pochades, there is less to break down and wear out. It uses only one adjustable hand screw, two position control hinges to hold the box open at any angle, and a simplified tripod attachment. These features reduce weight and setup time. Furthermore, there are no parts that protrude from the sides, top or bottom surfaces making it easier to slip in and out of a backpack or carrying case.
Can the angle of the Strada Easel palette be tilted and adjusted? Can the angle of the canvas holder be adjusted too?
In case of glare from the sun on the palette and canvas holder, the Strada Easel’s can be easily adjusted by moving the lid back and forth (just like you would a laptop...without having to unscrew any hinges or bolts).
Do I need a palette to use with the Strada Easel?
Although the bottom of the easel can serve as the palette, we recommend a 1/8" glass or Plexiglas (included) palette (with the underside primed an off white or mid-tone matte gray spray paint) to be inserted and sealed to the bottom of the palette box by adding a small bead of glue/silicone on each of the corners. If you prefer to not use glass we recommend that you prime the bottom of the box with any neutral matte gray paint that adheres to metal in order to reduce glare. You can find appropriate paint at any local hardware store.
What size panel/canvas can I paint on using the Strada Easel?
The Strada Easel can accommodate a canvas with a vertical dimension between 1” to 16". There is no restriction on the canvas width. The Strada Easel can accommodate a 1/16", 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" and 1" panel thickness (however the customer can customize it to fit unusual canvas widths up to 1").
Can the Strada Easel be placed on a tabletop and worked as a table easel?
Yes. The bottom of the easel is perfectly flat so the artist will be able to sit and paint from the Strada Easel on any flat surface.
Where do I hold the paper towels?
Many professional artists keep the paper towel roll under an arm. However, if you prefer you can hook a bungee cord on either side of the palette or on the legs of the tripod to serve as your paper towel holder.
How do I carry the Strada Easel?
The Strada Easel can be carried, along with other supplies, in a backpack or rolling carry bag.
Can you reuse the paint left in the palette for other painting location or other time?
Yes! The Strada Easel is designed so the paint can be left inside the box and be kept moist for several days. Heat speeds up an oil paint’s dry time so keeping the paint box cool will allow it to stay wet longer.
Do you have an oil painting kit?
Not at this time. However, we recommend the following supplies:
1. Strada Easel
2. Manfrotto aluminum tripod or other sturdy tripod with ballhead and quick release plate
3. Kelty Redwing 50 or other sturdy backpack
4. oil colors: Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Ultramarine Blue Deep, Cobalt Blue Light
5. brushes: hog bristle flats, filberts, or brights by Utrecht, Robert Simmons, or Silver Grand Prix.
6. palette knife
7. canvas panels
8. turpentine canister and odorless mineral spirits to clean brushes and thin oil paint (Brand name products like Gamsol or Turpeniold are recommended.) 9. misc. items (optional): paper towels, razor blade scraper, trash bags, hat, light weight jacket, snacks, water, sunscreen, bug repellant.
Can I buy the Strada Easel without a tripod?
Yes. We recommend using any sturdy tripod with a ball head attachment and quick release plate. The Strada Easel has a ¼” thread that accepts most tripods on the market today.
How do you ship?
We ship UPS Ground or USPS. You may contact Strada to make other arrangements.
Can paint, brushes or canvas fit in my box?
Strada believes that ‘the lighter the pack, the better’. Some easels and boxes on the market today include room for materials and supplies. This makes the easel/box a much heavier and bulkier product. Strada recommends using the pockets in your backpack or a light weight brush holder, paint holder and wet panel holder instead of adding extra weight and size to the box.
Do you sell panels or wet panel holders?
Not at this time. We recommend you contact RayMar Art for quality panels and wet panel holders.
